Oil palm cultivation was introduced into Malaysian in the same way rubber cultivation was.In the 1890's some oil palm seeds were taken from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and planted at the Botanical Gardens in Singapore.When the seeds germinated some seedlings were brought to Malaysia and planted on an experimental basis.This experiment was successful and it marked the birth of the palm oil industry in Malaysia.
The first oil palm estate was started in Sumatra in 1911.In 1917,a Frenchman,Henri Fauconnier started the first oil palm estate in malaysia.When this industry was profitable ,large areas of land were cleared for the cultivation of oil palm.Before the outbreak of the Second World War,Malaysia had become the fourth largest producer of palm oil.
After the japanese occupational , oil palm cultivation was intensified in Malaysia.During this period,there was much political instability in the rival palm oil producing countries.Due to this , Malaysia became the chief producer and exporter of palm oil.
After independence,small holders were encouraged to go into the cultivation of palm oil.In the 1970's,there was a great expansion of oil palm cultivation.
In 1979,the Palm oil research institute of Malaysia (PORIM) was established to enhance and support the well being of the palm oil industry in Malaysia .
Today,PORIM plays a vital role in the development and success of the palm oil industry in Malaysia.
