Malacca, the historical city of Malaysia , has an interesting past.It was an insignificant fishing village until it was founded by Parameswara, a Hindu Prince at the end of the 14th century.
In 1424 , Parameswara was succeeded by his son Sri Maharaja who took the title of Sultan Mahmud Shah and thus ,began the reign of the Malacca Sultanate.Due to its strategic position at the narrow f part of the Straits of Malacca where the Northeast Monsoon and the southeast Monsoon met ,Malacca became a prosperous maritime trading state.
Wealthy merchants from the middle east ,India and china met in Malacca.The traders from the Middle East brought rugs and carpets the Indian traders brought cotton,opium and gold while the Chinese traders brought silk and tea.Exotic spices were brought by the traders of the east indies.The traders bartered their goods in Malacca.
The person responsible for the development and expansion of Malacca was great leader called Tun Perak .He was the Bendahara(chief minister) of Malacca for 42 years and during this time ,Malacca conquered many territories.
On August 15,1511 The Portuquese ,under Alfonso D'Albuquerque captured Malacca and ruled it for 130 years.
In 1641 , Malacca came under the Dutch rule and it was administrated from Batavia which was the Dutch headquarters in the East.
According to the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 the dutch gave up Malacca to the English in exchange for Bencoolen.
The English were more interested in Singapore. Therefore ,they concentrated their development efforts in Singapore.Therefore , they concentrated their development efforts in Singapore.Soon after Malacca declined and has never regained its past glory since.
